PROFILE
The Multi-award winning, upscale Cantonese offers a unique fine dining experience for even the most culturally savvy diner with exemplary ingredients and classic cooking elevated to an art. T’ang Court restaurant located in the elegant Langham Xintiandi Hotel is the first restaurant to receive three Michelin Stars out of the two restaurants that deserve the accolade in Shanghai. Headed by Chef Tan who in his own words desires to explore “creativity through simplicity.
MUST TRY
The pan-fried pork buns and steamed pork dumplings with crab meat is a must try among T’ang Court Shanghainese classics.
AMBIENCE
T’ang Court’s sophisticated decor has a subtle Chinese flavor. Deep reds and yellows color fabrics, while the floors and Narumi bone china table settings have natural wood hues. The restaurant is divided into two parts, the very elegant private dining rooms where the Xintiandi area is spectacular and then the more open a la carte section.
SERVICE
The service really is unparalleled and the portions were neatly presented and the succession of dishes generates a harmonious experience. The staffs are friendly and helpful; however, some dishes are served with minimal description of what was served. Due to the limited number of seats in the restaurant, a reserved table can only be held for 15 minutes after the scheduled reservation time.
FOOD
Tang court dishes such as three scallions, fresh Shrimp balls, mustard chive hive flame burst and beef, COD etc has won numerous award. The tasting menu is only available in the private dining rooms, which you need to be 5 or more people to book. The menu at T’ang Court offers a wide range of classical Cantonese cuisine as well as many traditional Shanghainese dishes. There’s a focus on seafood in both types of cooking, so plenty of fish and shellfish (including abalone and lobster) are on the menu. An example includes the crispy and spicy combination of the addictive deep-fried prawns with wasabi-mayonnaise dressing. The oily, plain and delicious Chicken fried rice is also a delicious choice. The dessert, as well as the wine list, is not too extensive.
SUMMARY
Half a dozen award-winning dishes are not enough to put a restaurant as a whole on top. T’ang Court is awesome when done right, but a three-star restaurant must exhibit relentless consistency, and that is where T’ang Court could improve. Nevertheless, T’ang Court presents some of the most precise and well-executed Cantonese cuisines in Shanghai. It obviously qualifies as one of the best! But whether it deserves a three star or not is a discussion for another day.
